Broken Ground

The day we’ve been anxiously awaiting has arrived! While the builders have made a ton of progress gutting and re-framing the existing house, we’re finally breaking new ground on the additions.

First, they broke out all of the existing garage slab and driveway for the new 3-car, side facing garage.

Machine one involved in the process!
Machine 2 involved in this process. This thing looks intense.
Lots of concrete slab to dispose of.

The first pic shows the full size of the addition, which comes forward about 12′ from the existing front of the house, and will frame the porch across the front. We’ll just be pouring a new slab there, no basement underneath, so hopefully that can happen early next week.

Then, there is the other side…

On this (right) side of the house, we will have a very deep basement dug to fit the theater room and gym. We’re going down >12 feet, with an eventual ceiling height of 10+.

They had to dig a bit under the existing foundation also, to both underpin for the deeper addition wall, but also because they found that the house had settled a bit since it was originally built in the late 1970’s and we’re currently 1 3/8″ lower on this corner. Luckily all of the other corners are level, but we’ll need to raise this side up a bit so that the rest of the building can progress.

Always some new fun things to discover, as we pull back the layers! Luckily nothing that’s been too bad. The main house is old(er), and was built during a time of pretty cheap construction, so its not surprising to find a few things have not held up to the passing of time.

Still, this is the really exciting progress we’ve been craving! We expect about 2 weeks to get all of the concrete poured, assuming the weather holds up, and then they’ll begin framing out the new additions.
